A WINTER STORM WARNING
means that severe winter conditions have begun or are about to begin in your
area.
Get indoors! Stay indoors!
If you are outside:
- Find shelter.
- Stay dry and keep all parts of your body covered.
If you can not find shelter and you are stranded outside:
- prepare a lean-to, snow cave or some other protection from the wind.
- build a fire for heat and to attract attention. Place rocks around the fire to
absorb and reflect heat.
- Do not eat snow: It will lower your body temperature. Melt it then drink it.
If
you are stuck in your car or truck:
- Don't leave your vehicle to go for help. You can quickly become disoriented in
wind driven snow and cold.
- Make sure that your vehicle is visible to potential rescuers
-Tie a colored cloth (preferably red) to your antenna or door.
-Raise the hood indicating trouble after snow stops falling.
- Stay inside the vehicle.
- Run the motor about ten minutes each hour for heat. First make sure that the
exhaust pipe is not blocked. Be sure to open the window enough to allow fresh air
in to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Exercise periodically by vigorously moving arms, legs, fingers, and toes to keep
blood circulating.
If you are at home or inside a building:
- Stay inside.
- Use fire safeguards and make sure that you properly ventilate your room or
building especially if you are using a heat source such as a fireplace, wood stove,
spaceeater, etc.
- If you have no heat:
-Close off unused rooms and stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
-Keep windows covered at night.
-Make sure that you eat enough food to provide your body with sufficient
energy to produce its own heat.
-Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. You can remove
layers to avoid overheating.
