A Winter Storm Watch
is issued when conditions are favorable for hazardous winter weather conditions.
Watches are usually issued 12 to 36 hours in advance. |
| A Winter
Storm Warning is issued when winter weather conditions that pose a threat to life
and/or property are occurring, imminent or likely. It is used for a combination of two or
more winter weather events. |
| A Blizzard Warning is
issued when the following conditions are expected to last for 3 hours or longer:
1)sustained winds or frequent wind gusts of 35 mph or greater and 2) considerable falling
and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile. |

Heavy Snow Warning is issued when snowfall is expected to accumulate to a depth
of 4-6 inches in 12 hours or less or a depth of 6 inches or more in 24 hours
or less. Some variation in criteria occurs in certain sections of the country (
lower amounts in areas where lesser accumulations can cause significant impact and higher
amounts in areas that are accustomed to snow.) |
| An Ice Storm Warning is
issued for accumulation of 1/4 inch or more of freezing rain or at least 1/2 inch of
sleet. Some variation in criteria occurs in certain sections of the country ( lower
amounts in areas where lesser accumulations can cause significant impact and higher
amounts in areas that are accustomed to ice events.) |
| A Snow Advisory is issued
when snowfall of 2-5 inches is expected. |
| Freezing Rain/Drizzle, Sleet
Advisory is issued when accumulations of less than 1/4 inch of freezing rain or
freezing drizzle is expected or less than 1/2 inch of sleet is expected. |
| Blowing and/or Drifting Snow
Advisory is issued when considerable blowing and or drifting of snow across roads will
produce hazardous travel. |
