A Hurricane or Tropical Storm
Warning
means that Hurricane or Tropical Storm conditions are likely to occur in the
warning area within the next 24 hours.
Tropical Storm conditions:
winds 39 - 73 mph
Hurricane conditions: winds
74 mph or greater
Closely monitor radio, TV, or NOAA Weather Radio for official bulletins.
Listen to the advice of local officials, and leave immediately
if they tell you to do so.
Complete preparation activities, such as putting up storm shutters,
storing loose objects, etc.
If you are not advised to evacuate, stay indoors,
away from windows. Leave mobile homes in any case.
If evacuating
leave in daylight (if possible).
Stay with friends or relatives, at a low-rise inland hotel/motel, or go
to a predesignated public shelter outside a flood zone.
Notify neighbors and a family member outside of the warned area of your
evacuation plans.
Stay away from flood waters. If you come upon a flooded road, turn
around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising
rapidly around you, get out of the car and climb to higher ground.
Put food and water out for a pet if you cannot take it with you. Public
health regulations do not allow pets in public shelters, nor do most hotels/motels allow
them.
What to bring to a shelter:
first-aid kit; medicine;
baby food and diapers;
cards, games,
books;
toiletries;
battery-powered radio,flashlight (one per person), extra batteries;
blankets or sleeping bags;
identification, valuable papers (insurance), and cash.
Be aware that the calm "eye" is deceptive; the
storm is by no means over. The worst part of the storm will occur once the eye passes over
and the winds blow from the opposite direction. Trees, shrubs, buildings, and other
objects damaged by the first winds can be broken or destroyed by the second winds.
Be alert for tornadoes. They can occur
during a hurricane and after it passes over. Remain
indoors, in the center of your home, in a closet or
bathroom without windows.
Stay tuned to your local WeatherNet TV station, NOAA Weather Radio or other media for the latest
information.
